Triple-Rotor Perfection!

Never heard of the Series JC Mazda Eunos Cosmo? You are not alone. How could this engineering marvel have slipped through the cracks virtually unnoticed by so many JDM enthusiasts all these years? We have been so focused on the Nissan Skyline, Toyota Supra, and other awesome machines that we’ve unintentionally kept the Cosmo lurking in the shadows. Well, it’s time we take notice of this luxurious beast. There is plenty of information on this car pretty much anywhere you look, but let’s keep this short and sweet. Not too many speed junkies and gear heads prefer reading over driving, right?

The Mazda started production of its Series JC Eunos Cosmo in 1990. It is the ONLY Mazda to feature a 3-rotor engine coupled with an electronically controlled 4-speed automatic transmission. Although you had the engine options between a 13B-RE and a 20B-REW (sequential twin-turbocharger), let’s face it… why not go for the full punch? As the first ever twin sequential turbo system engines to be sold on a rotary engine car, it became very popular very quick. The 20B-REW was capable of 158 mph with 280 lb-ft of torque at 1800 rpm. Power and speed wasn’t enough to satisfy Mazda though. They decided to load this car with luxury features such as built-in GPS, Car Control System, a CRT color touch-screen controlling climate control, mobile phone, NTSC TV, radio and CD-Player.

How rare is the 20B-REW? There were 60 13B-RE Cosmos sold for every 40 20B-REW’s. With just under 9,000 total ever sold, that makes each 20B-REW one of about 4,000 every sold.
